Camera Obscura – My Maudlin Career
3) Camera Obscura – My Maudlin Career
Camera Obscura’s journey from slightly limp Belle & Sebastianites to glorious technicolour orchestral pop titans has been a long old slog, but to my ears it was worth every single mile. My Maudlin Career sounds both effortless and like the band have squeezed every last trip of emotion from their weeping soul. That, of course, doesn’t make any sense, but either does love. When Tracyanne croons “I would trade in my mother to hear you sing” on the swoonsome “The Sweetest Thing” it’s so lovelorn you know she means it and has her mum wrapped up just in case. Her voice is the ace throughout, sung with such character and even humour: “You want to be a writer… Fantastic Idea”. The sarcasm drips like honey.
Only one request: more up-tempo stompers like album opener “French Navy”, please.
